Master of the Magdalen Legend

Portrait of Charles V

This lent on behalf of our client joined Bellezza e Bruttezza, a moving exhibition from Bozar Brussels dedicated to beauty and ugliness in the Renaissance.

Charles V, the most powerful monarch of the first half of the 16th century, is often studied through the lens of his exceptional geopolitical history. As he asserted his imperial authority over his scattered territories through a powerful instrument, Charles V replaced his physical presence with his portrait, conceived by painters to serve the sovereign’s “ideological message.” Diane H. Bodart’s research on this subject has opened up the fascinating perspective of the assertion of power through a portrait that highlights the model’s mocked physical features, blurring the boundaries between beauty and ugliness—the very theme of the exhibition to which the work has been added courtesy of De Jonckheere.

Penitent Mary Magdalene

Our beautiful Penitent Mary Magdalene joined Brussels (20 February – 14 June 2026) and Milan (10 July – October 2026) for the moving exhibition Bellezza e Bruttezza.
Beauty and ugliness have always fascinated people, yet their meanings shift over time. The show explores how artists from Italy and Northern Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries depicted these extremes, from refined ideals to deliberate grotesques. A rare opportunity to see extraordinary works together.
