Winter continued with our Swiss Alps fair season, where we presented a selection of Winter Landscapes alongside Fontana’s monochromes and other modern works. Inspired by the extremely harsh winter of 1564, Pieter Bruegel the Elder was one of the first artists to paint winter as the sole subject of his compositions. Artists who followed him retained simple yet essential features to evoke a joyful moment in the snow: a balanced composition in an intimate setting, no explicit narrative, but hidden anecdotes revealed through great pictorial mastery and a unity of color built around many nuances of white.
